Drawings

January 15, 2014

May Gallery has made the drawings from my recent show “Butt Joints” available on their website here.

Framed ballpoint pen on notebook paper, 8″ x 10″ signed on the back in pencil.

Theses are very “fresh”. ¬†I was creating as many as 30 in one sitting, which surprised me since I normally spend days working on one composition. Then a select group became a publication with May Gallery’s Risograph and Constance’s finishing, as a zine, available here, and the 40 best of these originals are displayed at the “Butt Joints” show, and now online.

There is something important in these drawings, for me, in that I let everything go to mush. All my familiar shapes and compositional games are at work, but without the hemmed-in geometries. I’m seeing the mess is slightly more complex and surprising. The same composition done freehand goes different every time I try it, ruined different ways with unconscious unknowns. Using geometry involves more absolutes, and searching for absolute best arrangements¬†which is like finding perfect dead ends.

The paintings for Butt Joints also have something to do with these drawings, of course, but it’s still developing. Something’s opening new and unknown and it’s exciting.
