MOMO is a play

For four years, xhoch4 has designed the bill posters for Ingolstadt Theatre. This year they created an artists series using artworks that had already existed for their their own sake. Funny thing is, one of the plays wound up being Michael Ende’s “MOMO”

MOMO Y-3

After the W/F 2009 New York Fashion Week runway for Y-3 in February, I was invited to work on a shoe.  The idea was: I create paintings on full scale cow hides, and then Y-3 cuts the Hayworth Mid II pattern from the leather, producing a shuffled design I could not have predicted.  This fits with other experiments in chance and automation that I’ve played with lately.

The edition of 350 shoes, includes the “5 Shapes/3520 Artworks” mentioned in a previous post, a custom box, & custom laces.

Its a extreme honor to work with Yohji Yamamoto.  Thanks to his team, Oliver and Chrissa in particular.

3520 Artworks

November 8, 2009

Five shapes, with two sides, on a nail, create 3520 artworks. There are actually 3840 possible combinations, but 320 here are redundant when the smallest shape (the ring) becomes obscured by the two largest (the triangle & swipe). So whether the ring is color or white side up, makes no difference.

You can download a giant version of the image below, by clicking on it.

These shapes were manufactured to my specs by Y-3, to accompany the MOMOxY-3 Hayworth Mid II

This video shows all 3520 variations in seven minutes, no split screen.

San Francisco

Sam3 and MOMO collaboration at the San Fransisco Exploratorium.  Possibly the coolest place on Earth. I remember this contraption from when I was a child!

At Annon Domini
Sam3 had painted frames for his animation all over the gallery walls, running in all directions & then overlapping itself.  See animation Exsitu Insitu here More photos here

These markings above storm-drains in the city (might signal the last time they were inspected?) are everywhere, and so good looking… each color separated by loads of time, maybe a year, and happening everywhere in the city constantly! As a kid I used to think DPT really got up with the stencils, I mean I thought that for just like a minute.

The Rojo 3AM-6AM book arrived in the mail!
Collaboration and Photo credits are listed HERE (we ran out of room).
I have to say thanks again to everyone.  Artist’s names were in the art/photo credits so i forgot to put them in general thanks, it kind of goes without saying; they’re a big part of this in the material sense, but then also in the inspiration/faith department. xx

3AM-6AM Monograph from ROJO

Yall! – the 160 page book of MOMO is out. Just 500 copies & I’m buying a bunch. I’ve tried to focus on this colorful abstraction, from some really old collage through recent projects, some inspiration and life thrown in. It was a giant task, gathering what I felt was the best – it took three months, I think its well worth it & I’m really grateful. I hope you dig it.

<available at ROJO>

“Exploring giant-scale raw collage, refining it’s jumbling for use in computers, waterways, printing, collaborations, and looking at life. Jamaica, Korea, London, New York; by chance, joy, and anarchy.” Hahaha

This is a project Faile’s been piecing together for years.  All pages are different hand made artworks (often prints), from 25 artists.  There’s only 80 of them.  Whoa.  They’ll be having a release party soon.  My four pages spell out lyrics to a Dead Milkmen song Life is Shit in clouds and graffiti.  The other artists are tops .
